What does the research actually say?
Bilingual children are not behind their monolingual peers. They are building two systems at once, and the skills involved, switching between languages, holding two words for one idea, sensing which language fits which person, sharpen thinking in ways a single language does not.
A strong home language is not competition for English. It is the foundation English gets built on. The stronger that foundation, the easier the second language comes.
What this looks like in our rooms
We learn the words that matter. Hello, more, all done, toilet. Educators pick up the key words used by the children in their care, enough for a child to feel recognised in the middle of a big day away from home.
We reflect more than one language back. Books, songs, and posters across our rooms include languages beyond English where we can. Hearing a home language echoed back, even briefly, tells a child they belong here.
We ask families to share. If your family speaks a language other than English at home, your educators want to know. A few key words, a favourite lullaby, the way you say goodnight. Small details, but they shape how settled a child feels.
Will speaking our language at home slow down their English?
This is one of the most common worries families bring to us, and the honest answer is no. What actually drives English development is a child who feels safe, secure, and understood. That security very often comes first through the language they already know best.
Keep speaking your language at home. Keep singing the songs from your own childhood. Your child does not need you to switch to English for their sake. They need the richness of both.
Every language your child hears at home is not a delay. It is a head start.
