What age can my child start childcare in NSW?

Because knowing what to expect makes the whole journey a little easier.

It is one of the first questions parents ask when they start thinking about childcare. How old does my child actually need to be? And is there a right age to start? This guide answers both of those questions clearly, with everything you need to know about childcare ages in NSW.

There is no single right age to start childcare. But there are things worth knowing that make the decision a lot clearer.

What is the minimum age to start childcare in NSW?

In NSW, children can start at an approved long day care centre from as young as six weeks old. This is the minimum age under the Education and Care Services National Regulations, which apply across all states and territories in Australia.

At Little Jungle Early Learning in Dundas, we welcome babies from six weeks old into our Cuddle Cubs room, which is designed specifically for our youngest learners with warm, responsive care and low educator to child ratios.

Is there a best age to start childcare?

Research suggests that high quality childcare between 18 months and 4 years supports strong language development, independence, and social skills. However, many families start earlier due to work commitments and returning from parental leave, and quality care from six weeks can absolutely support healthy development when the right environment is in place.

The honest answer is that there is no universally best age. The quality of the care, the relationships your child builds with their educators, and the consistency of attendance matter far more than the exact age they start.

The right time to start childcare is when it is right for your family and your child. We are here to support you whenever that is.

What about vaccination requirements in NSW?

NSW has a No Jab No Play policy. Before your child can be enrolled at Little Jungle Early Learning or any approved childcare centre in NSW, you must provide documentation showing your child is up to date with their vaccinations or has an approved medical exemption. Your child's immunisation history statement is available through the Australian Immunisation Register via myGov.

When should I get on the waitlist?

This is important. Childcare places in Dundas, Parramatta and Rydalmere can fill many months in advance, particularly for younger age groups. We recommend getting on the waitlist at least 6 to 12 months before your preferred start date, especially if you are returning to work after parental leave.

At Little Jungle Early Learning in Dundas we welcome children from:

6 weeks old in our Cuddle Cubs room.

2 years old in our Tiny Tigers room.

3 years old in our Jungle Explorers room, where children access our Reggio and Montessori inspired preschool program.

Families can access the Child Care Subsidy and NSW Start Strong funding to help with costs. To enquire or join our waitlist, call us on (02) 9099 4418 or visit littlejungle.com.au.
