A child who once ate roasted vegetables is now negotiating over toast. Dinner turns into a stand-off. You start cooking two meals.
At Little Jungle Early Learning in Dundas, families raise this with us more than almost anything else, usually wondering what they did differently.
Nothing. This is close to universal, and it passes.
Fussy eating around two is a developmental stage, not a parenting outcome.
Why this matters more than most families realise
Two things collide around the second birthday.
Growth slows. A baby triples their birth weight in a year. A toddler does not, so they need proportionally less food and their appetite drops to match.
At the same time they discover they have opinions, and that food is one of the few places those opinions carry real weight. Refusing dinner is one of the first genuinely effective things a toddler finds.
Add neophobia, the wariness of new foods that arrives at this age, and you get a child who eats four things and views everything else with suspicion.

Built into everything we do, all day
We keep offering without pressure. A food often needs to appear ten or more times before a child tries it. Most of us stop at three.
Educators eat with the children. A child watching an adult enjoy something is more persuasive than a child being told to try it.
Children serve themselves where they can. Control is most of what the refusal is about, so we hand some back.
Nobody is made to finish. Once a plate becomes a negotiation, eating has become the battleground.
No bargaining with dessert. Trading vegetables for pudding teaches that pudding is the prize.
The Little Jungle difference
Meals are cooked on site each day to the Australian Dietary Guidelines, and we follow Munch & Move. A kitchen in the building means we can adjust a meal for a child who is struggling, on the day.
But the part that changes children is one no parent can replicate at home.
A two year old who has refused a food for months will often try it because the child beside them is eating it, and nobody made a fuss about it.
The most effective thing at our mealtimes is not the menu. It is the other children.
Come at lunchtime. It is the most honest half hour of our day. Book a tour or call us on 1300 192 598.
