A stranger walks into the room. Different voice, different rules, a bag full of things nobody has seen before.
For a three year old, that is a significant event. Some children are in it within seconds. Others watch from the edge of the mat for twenty minutes before they move.
At Little Jungle Early Learning in Dundas, both of those are the point.
An incursion is not entertainment for the children. It is practice at meeting the world.
Why this matters more than most families realise
Children spend most of their week with the same educators, in the same rooms, following the same rhythm. That predictability is what makes them feel safe, and we protect it.
But a child who only ever meets familiar adults does not get much practice at the thing school will ask of them constantly. A new teacher. A visiting specialist. A relief adult on a Tuesday.
An incursion is a safe version of that. A new person, new instructions, something unfamiliar to try, all inside the room they already trust, with the educators they already know sitting beside them.
The child who watches from the edge for twenty minutes and then joins in has done something significant. We do not rush that.

Built into everything we do, all day
HappyFeet, fortnightly. Dance and movement. Rhythm, following a sequence, moving in a group without bumping into anyone, and the confidence to look silly in front of other people.
Active Beginnings, fortnightly. Sport and gross motor skills. Balance, throwing, catching, taking turns, waiting for a turn, and coping when you miss.
Because the two alternate, there is something on most weeks of the term. The regularity matters more than any single session. A child who has done this fifteen times approaches the sixteenth visitor differently.
Visiting specialists as they come up. We recently had a dentist in for check-ups. Going to the dentist is a common fear, and the children were fascinated. Sitting in a familiar room, watching their friends go first, with someone explaining what each tool does.
The Little Jungle difference
An incursion can be a one-off on the calendar, booked for the photos and mentioned at enrolment.
We run ours on a fortnightly rotation so they are part of the program rather than an event. And they are covered by the daily fee.
Every child in the room does every session. Nobody is watching from the door.
